Unlocking Pain Relief and Recovery with Shockwave Therapy

We are always trying to help patients move better, recover faster, and live healthier. We are extremely excited to announce a new tool to our Clinic: the Chattanooga RPW Shockwave Machine. This advanced therapy technology is a game-changer for treating many common painful conditions, accelerating healing, and improving performance. Let’s dive into what shockwave therapy is, how it works, and how it will enhance your treatment experience with us.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Radial Pressure Wave (RPW) therapy is a type of Shockwave therapy. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate tissue repair and reduce pain. Our shockwave machine creates a powerful pulsation that penetrates deeper into the tissue to target stubborn pain and tightness. This can be particularly beneficial for chronic conditions, tendinopathies, trigger points, or injuries that just haven’t responded to other forms of treatment.

Our Shockwave device is known for its precision and effectiveness, making it ideal for our approach.

How Does Shockwave Work?

Shockwave therapy works by delivering targeted acoustic(sound) waves directly to areas of discomfort. Once the probe touches the skin, the acoustic energy pulses turn into mechanical waves that penetrate deeper into the affected tissue. You will FEEL the pulses in the tissue, which creates a physiological response of accelerating natural healing processes. Here’s how it works step-by-step:

  1. Increased Blood Flow: The acoustic waves stimulate a process called neovascularization (new blood vessel formation) around the affected tissue. This increase in blood flow plays an important role in delivering nutrients and removing waste products that build up around injured tissue.

  2. Pain Reduction: By desensitizing pain receptors, shockwave therapy can provide immediate relief from discomfort. Patients often report feeling less pain after just one session.

  3. Scar Tissue Remodeling/Resorption: The increased blood flow helps promote the remodeling of scar tissue and removal of adhesions that may be causing pain or limited mobility. Breaking down these tissues allows the body to lay down new, healthier tissue, leading to things such as decreased pain, improved flexibility, and range of motion.

  4. Collagen Production: Collagen is essential for strong, flexible tissues. The shockwave pulses stimulate collagen synthesis, which strengthens tendons and ligaments to prevent future injuries.

Conditions Treated by Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is incredibly versatile and can be used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

  • Tennis/Golfers Elbow

  • Patellar Tendinopathy

  • Frozen Shoulder

  • Calcific Shoulder Tendinitis

  • Shin Splits

  • Stubborn Muscle “Strains”

  • Myofascial Trigger Points

  • Upper Trap Tightness

  • And much more!

How We Integrate Shockwave Therapy in Our Clinic

We believe in a movement-focused, hands-on approach to healing, and Shockwave fits seamlessly into our philosophy. We see shockwave therapy as a complement to our physical therapy sessions, enhancing the results of manual therapy, exercise, and functional movement training.

If shockwave therapy is determined to be appropriate for your specific issue we will incorporate it into the treatment sessions. The shockwave device will be placed directly to the area of pain or tension. The Shockwave treatment is quick (typically lasting about 5-10 minutes), requires no anesthesia, and has very little side effects.

What to Expect During Your Shockwave Therapy Sessions

For most patients, shockwave therapy feels like a series of quick, tapping sensations on the skin, and it’s generally well-tolerated(intensity can be modified). Some people feel immediate relief, while others may notice gradual improvement over a few sessions. We will always continue to monitor progress and adjust the frequency of treatments based on your needs.

Is Shockwave Therapy Right for You?

If you’re dealing with pains associated with tendinopathies, muscles, limited mobility, or old injuries that won’t seem to heal, shockwave therapy may be an ideal addition to your treatment plan. As with all treatments we utilize, we will first evaluate you to determine the best approach for your individual issue.

A Commitment to Enhanced Recovery and Performance

We’re passionate about using the best treatment methods to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients. Our Shockwave machine aligns perfectly with our philosophy of “movement as medicine” by encouraging faster, more effective healing through active and targeted therapy.
